A Guide to Understanding Lineage
So I see you've got a Nordanner with some lineage, and you're here to figure out how to write it all out! It's pretty easy, just follow the steps below and you'll have it figured out in no time!
This page is an extension of the Registration page. You should head there if you are looking for information on how to register your horse!
If you've been in the HARPG for some time, you'll be pretty familiar with the grid system. If you're new, no worries! This is what Nordanner's Lineage system looks like:

Transitioning Old Horses
Old horses (defined as horses that already have registration images accepted into this group before 6/10/17) that are switching to this new format or have changed owners will most likely need to update their lineage to the current format!
Old horses (defined as horses that already have registration images accepted into this group before 6/10/17) that are switching to this new format or have changed owners will most likely need to update their lineage to the current format!
Okay...sooo....How do I get started?
Okay, I have the names of my horse's ancestors and the starters - what do I do with them??
- If your horse is one that has been registered before, you will need the old reference so you have the horse's lineage and can save yourself some time!
- If your horse is a foal that has not been registered yet, or has had the old reference deleted, there are a couple of things you can do -- see the pro-tip below for more details!
- START with your horse's sire and dam and the lineage grid above -- Put the sire and dam into the lineage grid in the "ID Name" format, and link their references if they are still living.
- NEXT pick either the sire or dam's lineage to work on. You will need to fill out any remaining ancestors from them! Remember to use the "ID Name" format! Keep going until you have the entire lineage for that horse filled out!
- What if a horse in the lineage is deceased? --> See below sections!
- NEXT If you picked the sire's lineage to fill out first, go back and fill out the dam's lineage. If you filled out the dam's lineage first, go back and fill out the sire's lineage!
- IF YOU REACH THE END OF THE GRID. You will move on to the Additional Starters List.
Okay, I have the names of my horse's ancestors and the starters - what do I do with them??
- Every living horse in the lineage grid and the starter list must be linked and be current with references.
- Every deceased horse in the lineage grid and the starter list must be listed in plain text.
- To find current references, please go to the ID List.
- You can search specific IDs on the Welcome page by simply typing the horse's ID (with NO SPACES after) and then hitting enter.
- Simply type out the horse's ID and Name in plain text on the appropriate section of the lineage grid or starter list. Do NOT put a link to their deceased reference. You can put (Deceased) next to the horse's name, however we do not require it to register the horse.
- If you aren't sure whether or not a horse is deceased, check the ID List. Deceased horses will have a status after their ID which says deceased, and all of their information cells will be dark gray and struck-through.
- Nope! Not needed! You can leave it as-is in the grid, or simply write (S) or (Starter) next to the name and move on. The "Starter List" is for starters that appear in the extended lineage that extends beyond the basic grid. All starters listed in the basic grid do not have to be relisted.
- Simply follow the instructions on this page! You will need to fill out the lineage grid with current links to all the horses, or plain text if those horses are now deceased. Then, you will need to sort out the starters from the rest of the horses in that horse's lineage and include them in the Additional Starters List. You should do this prior to submitting your horse's registration in order to save time for both yourself (in waiting for the registration to be accepted) and also time on the admin's end.
- Okay, take a deep breath and don't panic. Your horse is not gone, we promise! Now, scroll down just a little bit further and find the "Pro-Tip: Finding Lost Lineages" section. Under that section, we've included a couple of different ways to recover lost lineages!
- This information is covered under the Redesigns & Recreations page. You will want to check out Recreations.
