Potions - Change your horse's appearance!

Nordanner has a variety of potions available to give your horse a new custom look, or give them some seriously cool magic effects!
These potions are split into three separate categories:
  • Free Potions
  • Unlockable Potions
  • Breedable Potions
As always -- If you are searching for a specific potion and what it does, use ctrl f and type in the potion name to take you right to that one on the page. This page is quite lengthy, and that's the best way to find what you need!
If you have any further questions about Potions that aren't on this page, make sure to check the FAQ page.

Let's dig into the different types and what they do, eh?

Free Potions

Picture
Free potions are what they say on the tin -- potions that are completely free to use!
For these potions, there is no process required for their use. You simply add and remove them as you wish to your horse in order to change their appearance!
These potions may be used on their own, or combined in a variety of ways to create all sorts of desired effects, and those effects can last for the life of the horse. But don't worry! They may be removed by simply feeding your Nordanner some sugar water, as the story goes. The Royal Wizards have confirmed that it is so, regardless of how ludicrous it may sound!
  • Note: You do not have to put in a claim or item use in the bank to use these potions. You simply apply and remove them as you wish! You also do not have to create an image showing you feeding your Nordanner the potion, or the sugar water to remove the potion.
  • Note: You may not create your own potions, however you may be able to create the effect you are looking for by combining these free potions with unlockable ones!
  • Note: You may include potions on your Nordanner's official reference if you wish. However, potions may not be used to drastically alter your Nordanner's design -- it must clearly be the same horse.

The Royal Wizards have also, in conjunction with the Beast Master Vear, compiled ways in which these potions may be useful in combat with dragons!

What potions are "free potions" you ask?
Well, let's cover that now. There are also some examples for what each potion could look like -- but truthfully there are many presentations of each potion.
Picture

Moonglow

This potion combines knowledge of ancient elvish and fae magics to make the horse shine, glitter, and glow. The aura and sparkles may be any color from pale moonlight to a shiny rainbow. It does add a small amount of protection, but is mostly used for show purposes.

Useful for:
  • Hunting Pike dragons, as they seem to pause prior to attacking, and may have a mesmerizing effect on them.
  • Offers some resistance to the paralyzing fog summoned by Shadowstalkers.
  • May be used to frighten off Vlyths.
  • Can be useful for lighting in conjunction with Oceanpearl when venturing into the depths to hunt Demophons and Sea Dragons, or as a source of light when cavediving for Cave Dragons.

Picture

Fieldflower

This potion is a less-intense version of Hearthstone, and is intended purely for show purposes. It creates growths of flowers and small ornamental plants. In small amounts, it creates smaller plant growths, and in larger amounts it may grow plants large and dense enough to cover the entire horse. It also has a particularly odd effect of giving the horse a flowery scent.

Useful for:
  • It has no purposes that may be useful for protection from or defeating dragons, but perhaps it might be useful for stealth?
  • It may also prove useful in growing plants which can be used as medicinal salves -- provided that your Nordanner can be convinced to grow a specific plant.

Picture

Toxicate

This potion is both a dragon repellant and perfect protection from horse thieves.  Dragons don't dare take a bite of a horse using this potion -- and it causes nausea, dizziness, and intense gastrointestinal distress when humans come into contact with a toxicated horse. To avoid riders and handlers becoming sick, it is safe for them to consume a few drops of this potion in order to build up an immunity. The magic of this potion displays as a greenish shine or glow on the horse.

Useful for:
  • Most scenarios involving many of the dragon species. It will not help against species that are primary magic users, but it will help ward off physical attacks as dragons won't bite a toxicated horse!
  • Combating poison or toxic effects from not only dragons -- but also would-be human poisoners, venomous snakes, and toxic plants. (or just warding off pesky flies and other bugs -- it's useful for more than fighting dragons!)

Picture

Heat

This potion gives the horse the ability to survive extreme heat and even direct flames. It's often used by dragon hunters, as it will protect both horse and rider from the heat of dragon fire. The magic of this potion displays as a glowing, fire-like aura.

Useful for:
  • Keeping a horse and rider warm when hunting dragons in the winter or exploring Quendorin -- as it also provides some insulation from the cold.
  • Fending off dragon fire, or fire in general.
  • Disorienting a Shadowstalker pack, or frightening off Vlyths.
  • Could be used to ignite a Repugnid's secretions, or simply to stop them from attacking long enough to take them down.

Picture

Oceanpearl

This potion gives the horse the ability to breathe underwater, and also creates a tail resembling any aquatic species. The magic in this potion has been known to create tails resembling anything from a betta fish, to a shark, dolphin, or even a whale -- and of course anything in between. Which tail your the horse ends up with tends to be completely random, and completely dependent on the horse. This potion only takes effect when your Nordanner is exposed to water.

Useful for:
  • Diving off the coasts of any of the continents to look for lost treasure, seashells, or collecting useful materials. Could also be used to retrieve lost underwater objects.
  • A must for hunting Sea Dragons and Demophons.

Picture

Blood

The Blood potion is one of three 'dark magic' potions available for use. It invites the spirit of a demon into the horse, transforming it into a bloodthirsty creature. The horse will grow fangs if provided with a diet consisting of either blood or fresh meat, and over time the eyes of the horse will begin to change a red color. The shape and size of the fangs, and brightness of the horse's eyes will depend on what the horse is fed, and how often it is fed. Horses with this potion can also manifest as a dark aura or dark smoke. This potion has no lingering effects once removed.

Useful for:
  • Hunting particularly aggressive species of dragon, as your horse can tend to become aggressive with this potion.
  • Giving your horse a different look, and embracing the darkness that lies within us all.

Picture

Auralight

This potion creates a strong aura that keeps the horse happy and healthy. It also creates a bright, glowing, glittering aura the glistens across the horse's coat. For unknown reasons, this potion sometimes also creates thin stripes of aura coloring along the edges of markings on the horse. The color of the aura presented depends entirely on the horse it is applied to, and it isn't entirely unusual for the aura color to shift with the mood of the horse.

Useful for:
  • Hunting Pike Dragons, as it also has the unusual effect of mesmerizing them for a few moments.
  • Frightening off Vlyths.
  • Healing minor wounds and other maladies.

Picture

Icefinger

This potion operates as ice flowing in the horse's veins, cooling down its core temperature. The horse does become a rather cold ride, and the magic does not extend to the rider -- warm clothes are highly recommended! The magic of this potion presents as frost and ice particles on the horse's mane, tail, legs, and some portions of the coat. This frosting is so cold that foggy mist tends to pour from the horse where it is frosted over.

Useful for:
  • Hunting Frostbiters, as it offers some level of protection from their attacks and the bitter cold in which they live.
  • Exploring deep into the tundra of Quendorin, or exploring the many ice caves carved into the permafrost.
  • Deterring cold-blooded species such as Dramanders.
  • It might also prove useful in hot climates, both keeping the horse and handlers or riders cool!

Picture

Nightshade

This potion is the second of three 'dark magic' potions available for use. The effects of this potion can vary, and appear to depend on the horse. Some grow bat-like wings, some sprout a lion or unicorn-like tail, and others grow elongated or twisted facial features, including an elongated jawline. The eyes of the horse will often change to a gold or orange color. The horse's temperament tends to worsen, making them aggressive and difficult to handle -- in rare cases, horses have been known to go completely insane.

Useful for:
  • Many of the same uses as Blood, as it makes the horse more aggressive and thus a better fighter for hunting dragons.
  • Can also be used for aesthetic purposes.

Picture

Goldenwing

This potion causes a single pair of wings to grow on the horse. These wings can vary in size depending on the dose, meaning that not enough will cause wings which do not support flight. The wings are bird-like and usually match the horse's base coat and markings. Unlike the Guardian Breedable Potion, the wings can be removed from the horse with a dose of sugar water. This potion may also have weird affects in addition to the Guardian Breedable Potion, including but not limited to: Increasing or reducing the amount of wings, temporarily hiding the wings as a reaction to sugar water, etc.

Useful for:
  • Fighting flying dragons such as Sky Dragons, Vrux, and Scavs.
  • Helpful in hunting Repugnids.
  • Helpful in fighting Estorn and Vlyth.
  • A great way to cross the continents and oceans in a timely manner.

Picture

Ram

This potion causes horns or antlers to grow on the horse. Size, shape, color, placement, and number will vary depending on the dose and the horse. This potion can be used to create a single unicorn horn, a pair of stunning antlers, or multiple horns on one horse for dramatic effect.

Useful for:
  • Might be useful in some fighting or dragon hunting scenarios for fending off attacks.
  • Primarily used for aesthetic purposes.

Unlockable Potions

Picture
To put it simply, these potions are exactly what they say they are: unlockable!
To use these potions for free, your horse must reach the desired kaaring level. However, you can also purchase them for immediate use, or craft them at the Crafting Bench!
  • Note: You do not have to put in a claim or item use in the bank to use these potions if they are earned through kaaring level. You simply apply and remove them as you wish! You also do not have to create an image showing you feeding your Nordanner the potion, or the sugar water to remove the potion.
  • Note: In order to use a purchased, crafted, or found potion without your horse meeting the kaaring level requirements, you will have to submit a item use in the #item-redeem channel in the Discord.
  • Note: You may not create your own potions, however you may be able to create the effect you are looking for by combining these unlockable potions with free ones!

What potions are "unlockable potions", and what level of kaaring do you need to reach to use them, you ask?
Well, let's cover that now. There are also some examples for what each potion could look like -- but truthfully there are many presentations of each potion. To see what kaaring level you need to reach for each potion, make sure you look over the visual examples provided!
Picture

Hearthstone

Allows for the horse to present certain earthly qualities -- such as sprouting rocks from the topline, shedding sand from their fur, growing larger plants and roots than Fieldflower alone, etc. Also tends to harden the horse's bones, making a dragon more likely to break a tooth should it try to take a bite.

Useful for:
  • Fights against Anaxyrus, Bonesnapper, Cave Dragons, Sky Dragons, Orthoraptors, Pike Dragons, Vrux, Estorn, and Swamp Mules as these dragons and monstrosities use primarily physical attacks. The protection and hardening this potion provides your horse could prove as a useful defense.
  • Stealth when hunting in Wood Dragon territory for gems, or for stealth in general.
  • Growing larger amounts of healing plants to treat wounds sustained in battle, or simply for decoration.

Picture

Aquarius

This potion is primarily a companion to Oceanpearl, and causes water to continuously rain from the horse's mane and tail. It also causes orbs or "balls" of floating water around the horse, which may or may not contain fish and other small aquatic species.

Useful for:
  • Dousing fire, including dragon fire.
  • Could use the bubbles of fish underwater as a lure for Demophons or Sea Dragons.
  • Could be used as a source of water in times of drought or during hot weather.

Picture

Regalus

Causes the horse to sprout a mane similar to a lion, and overall thickens their fur. Longer fur may appear down the spine, rump, chest, and underbelly. This potion does not create a lion-like tail however, that is the Nightshade potion.

Useful for:
  • Enduring the bitter cold of the Quendorin tundra while hunting Frostbiters.
  • Keeping the horse warm at high elevations, whether on the ground or in the air.
  • Keeping horse and rider warm during winter training sessions, or simply used for aesthetic purposes.

Picture

Ares

Causes a constant breeze to blow around the horse. Depending on its mood, this breeze could be a mighty gust or a gentle summer breeze. Cannot produce weather of any kind, even when combined with other potions. However, combinations may allow sparkling or colored winds. Be careful using this potion though -- an angry horse might be likely to blow everyone over!

Useful for:
  • Buffeting back flying foes such as Vlyth, Sky Dragons, Vrux, Estorn, and frightening off Dramanders.
  • Could be used to give extra lift and relieve some of the strain on the horse during long flights.

Picture

Iosmair

Causes sparklers, firecrackers, and other fireworks to appear around the horse without harm to the horse. Larger fireworks may shoot from the mane, tail, or topline to burst overhead. Most commonly allows for the mane and tail of the horse to be filled with sparklers of any color. Does not alter the horse's design or coat color. While these fireworks are harmless to the horse, they can burn a rider, or pop rather nastily in a dragon's mouth, so most dragons tend to avoid a horse with this potion.

Useful for:
  • Frightening off packs of Shadowstalkers, Vlyths, Dramanders, and Scavengers.
  • Could be used to draw out Repugnids in combination with Goldenwing to avoid touching the ground.
  • Show purposes and celebrations such as parades.

Picture

Tempest

Causes lightning bolts on or around the horse. This lightning may periodically strike the ground, surrounding objects, or even people and other horses, so be cautious with its use! The horse will also often leave blackened hoofprints and electrify horseshoes and tack -- or anything else the horse touches. That being said, this potion does not allow the horse to shoot lightning from the nose, mouth, eyes, or any other place on their bodies.

Useful for:
  • Warding off physical attacks from Anaxyrus, Bonesnapper, Cave Dragons, Sky Dragons, Orthoraptors,  and Pike Dragons, as these dragons aren't likely to take a bite from a horse that could zap them in the mouth.
  • Could frighten off packs of Shadowstalkers, Vlyth, and could be used to flash-bang Estorn and stun them for a moment to allow attacks -- even if direct contact with the potion will do nothing.
  • Could be used to draw out and stun Repugnid and Pike Dragons.
  • A great deterrent for would-be horse thieves.

Picture

Winterbreeze

This potion is a companion to Icefinger. Causes constant snow on and around the horse. This snow can be light or heavy, depending on the horse's mood. In some cases, the flakes of snow will be sporadic and mild, with a light dusting of snow in the mane, tail, feather, and topline. While riders are in contact with the horse, they are unaffected by the cold.

Useful for:
  • Use in conjunction with Icefinger and Regalus to withstand the bitter cold of the Quendorin tundra when hunting Frostbiters or exploring.
  • Deterring Dramanders.
  • Simply for aesthetic purposes, or in conjunction with Icefinger to keep the horse and rider cool on hot summer days!

Picture

Shadowmane

This potion is the third of three 'dark magic' potions available for use. It causes dark matter to form in the horse's mane, tail, and feathering or fetlocks. A dark aura also surrounds the horse, which tends to warn away most dragons and other predators. While this potion doesn't appear to harm the horse, it can leave those who touch it with a rather unsettled feeling. There have been reports of feeling haunted by the dead, feeling watched when no one is there, etc.

Useful for:
  • Deterring Shadowstalker packs, as they tend to avoid this potion.
  • Use with Blood or Nightshade to increase the dark magic effects!
  • For aesthetic purposes, to embrace the darknesss in us all (or just a cool costume).

Picture

Might of the Dragon

Causes dragon-like qualities such as scaling, dragon-type tail, added claws and teeth, fire breathing, and enhanced size and height. Scaling does not necessarily cover the whole body, and may have a wide range of colors, but generally don't have more than two colors at a time. Scales also offer some protection by hardening the skin of the horse.

Useful for:
  • Deterring Vlyth, Shadowstalkers, or scaring off Dramanders and Scavengers.
  • Combining with Goldenwing to combat Repugnids from the air.
  • Aesthetic purposes to make your Nordanner more dragon-like.

Picture

The World Really Does Revolve Around You

Causes miniaturized versions of planets (whether discovered or undiscovered) to orbit around the horse. Often comes with a small spattering of stars that hover around the planets, but never attach to the horse themselves. Weather, although miniaturized, is accurate to each of the planets, so touching them is generally a bad idea for riders and handlers. The little stars don't seem to harm anyone when touched, though. This potion also has the side effect of giving the horse a sizeable ego boost, which may make them a bit harder to handle and work with.

Useful for:
  • Primarily aesthetic purposes for shows or parades. This potion is not particularly useful in combat or hunting situations.

Picture

Cometchaser

This potion not only has visual effects, but also some physical ones as well. It gifts the horse with superior speed and the trail of a comet when moving quickly. Tends to leave behind sparkly and fiery hoofprints, and should be used with caution if the horse is a racer. When the horse is still, this potion also causes white or pale-colored fire to sprout from the mane, tail, and feathers or fetlocks. It also causes a pale aura around the horse -- and it is said that this aura and the flames are pulled from the stars themselves. These flames and aura do not harm the riders and handlers of the horse, but can be dangerous to other horses and humans that the horse does not like.

Useful for:
  • Situations where a boost of speed is useful, such as hunting: Bonesnappers, Cave Dragons, Sky Dragons, Orthoraptors, Repugnids, Estorn, Shadowstalker, and Swamp Mules.
  • The flames could be used as a source of light in a variety of situations.
  • Giving your horse an ethereal appearance.

Picture

Favor of the Queen

Causes the horse to display a most precious element: gold. This potion can give the horse gold hooves, eyes, add streaks or change the mane and tail to the color of gold, and allow gold dust to rain from the coat and edges of white markings. In rare cases, small diamonds have also been found raining from the horse. This potion is not intended to alter the horse's design in any way, only showcase that the horse has earned their worth! The horse may also leave golden glowing footprints and dust or diamonds behind where they walk. This potion can be dangerous to thieves who are on the lookout for horses with this potion, and may also increase the risk of your horse being nabbed by a dragon for their hoard. Not harmful to handlers or riders except that they may need to brush off the gold dust after a ride.

Useful for:
  • Primarily aesthetic purposes in shows or parades.
  • Potential as a lure to hoarding dragons, to help you find their lairs easier!

Breedable Potions

Breedable Potions work quite a bit different than the other two kinds of potions above!

Firstly, they are not available as free-to-use or as something that is earnable for every horse through kaaring.

Secondly, these potions can pass onto offspring with a 50% chance for each geno.

Thirdly, these potions must be added prior to the horse being designed (for an import) or during the breeding process (for a foal).

You can learn more about the different Breedable Potions in our Design Guides: Anomalies, Breedable Potions, RNG Traits.
