Lilac Bases
Occurs as: E_ aa lili | E_ A_ lili
Lilac is a dilute gene which is similar to the Grey gene -- causing the base coat to dilute to a lilac-toned or silvery grey color. It affects the entire base coat equally, diluting both the body and the mane and tail.
Lilac is a homozygous recessive gene, meaning that it must have two copies in order for it to be present. Additionally, lilac only shows on black or bay-based horses, and is a carrier on chestnut bases.

Horses with this gene CAN:
- Show on either a black or bay base, and only appear in the homozygous recessive form: lili
- Display the base coat as a lilac-grey hue.
- Have a mane and tail which are either the same shade as the body, or darker.
- Have countershading, or "pangare-like" effects on the coat, without pangare present.
- Have red or pink-toned eyes.
- Optionally have darker grey skin than the body.
- Have white markings that are not caused by any form of genetic white. Please see the Natural White page to learn more about what is acceptable for non-genetic white.
Horses with this gene CANNOT:
- Appear on a chestnut base. On a chestnut base, lilac will always appear as (lilac carrier).
- Appear in heterozygous recessive, or nli form. nli will always appear as (lilac carrier).
- Display eye colors other than red or pink, unless another gene which changes eye color is present.
- Have a mane and tail which are lighter than the body, unless silver is present.
- Be so saturated that they appear purple, without glimmer present.
- Have pink or peach-toned skin.
See the color bar below for a range of acceptable shades.
The examples below show only a few of the accepted shades, for you to get an idea of the range of shades possible with black. Overall, the color bar above should be your guide for the acceptable range of coloration.
Please note: Nordanner genes may simplify certain genes from real life. Genes may not present in Nordanner the way they do in real life or in other ARPG breeds, and are as close to being realistic as possible while still maintaining standards within the breed.
