Modifier: Banding
Occurs as: __ nBd | __ BdBd
Banding is a non-natural modifier gene in Nordanner. A modifier is a gene which 'modifies' the appearance of a horse, but have different effects than dilutes. Modifiers usually don't change the base coat color, or affect it very little -- instead, they add a different appearance to the underlying base.
Banding is a modifier gene that primarily affects the mane and tail, causing stripes or 'bands' of lighter or darker color in the main and tail. The gene may also affect the body -- causing striping similar to skunks, badgers, raccoons, etc.
Banding is a dominant gene, meaning that it only needs one copy, or allele, in order for it to be present. Banding also cannot be carried, and will be present in the phenotype of the horse if it has at least one copy of the gene.
This gene does not change the base coat color of the horse, but instead creates an effect on top of it.

Horses with this gene CAN:
- Have stripes or 'banding' in the mane or tail (or both) that are either lighter or darker than the base coat of the horse.
- Banding must be a single color which is either lighter or darker than the base coat, including black and white.
- May be hard-edged or blended.
- May go in any direction, as long as all banding is parallel to each other and go the same direction.
- Have a minimum of a single band in either the mane or tail, with no maximum number of bands in both the mane and tail.
- Optionally have simple horizontal body and facial stripes. Stripes may be blended, hard-edged, or both.
- Optionally have differing opacities, as long as the color remains the same throughout.
- Appear under natural and genetic white.
Horses with this gene CANNOT:
- Have banding that is more than one color, or a color that does not match the base coat -- the banding must be lighter or darker than the base coat, including black and white.
- Present body striping without banding in either the mane or tail.
- Have body striping that is complex (like tabby), or that creates shapes, patterns, swirls, etc. -- all striping should be simple and horizontal across the body, and must match the banding in the mane and/or tail in color.
- Appear over mutations, breedable potions, or anomalies as it is a base coat modifier.
- Have eye color changes as a result of banding.
The examples below show only a few of the accepted presentations, for you to get an idea of the range of presentations possible with Banding.
Please note: Nordanner genes may simplify certain genes from real life. Genes may not present in Nordanner the way they do in real life or in other ARPG breeds, and are as close to being realistic as possible while still maintaining standards within the breed.
