1.2.4 Monstrosities: Vlyth

Vlyth

Monstrum hirudo
Picture
Typical Adult Vlyth 6-7 ft | ~1-2 m wingspan. Lifespan: 1-2 years.

About:

Vlyth, or Vampire Moths are a large, moth-like species–aptly named due to their feeding habits, which is primarily the blood of large livestock and dragons. They are also an exclusively nocturnal species, finding crevasses in rocks, caves, or even abandoned structures to hide during the daylight hours. While not particularly aggressive, they are known to be quite the pest, moving from place to place in large colonies–leaving marks behind on whole herds of livestock, though they rarely leave any dead behind. Vlyths do not commonly attack humans, but if provoked will typically feign a large attack, then flee. However, an aggravated Vlyth is capable of tearing through armor and even dragon scales with the hook-like claws they possess!
Vlyth are known to have terrible vision, but can still perceive bright flashes of light or sources of open flame–and will avoid them, as their soft exoskeleton will easily burn much like flesh. This lack of sight does not slow them from hunting their prey, as they use sound vibrations and an acute sense of smell to guide them. Vlyths reproduce much in the same way as typical butterflies or moths, going through a larval, pupae, and imago phase. It has been noted that while in the larval or pupae stages they are protected by a toxin that causes paralysis and extreme nausea–which can either be absorbed by direct touch, or by bites from a defensive larvae. Once a Vlyth emerges from its pupa stage–it must rest to dry and fully unfurl its wings before joining the rest of the colony on hunts. At this stage, it takes on the typical appearance of soft, fuzzy bodies, bright red eyes, and the mesmerizing “eyes” on its wings–which may be up to four total.
They are believed to be hermaphroditic–as there is no known distinction between male and female.

Hunting Recommendations:Moonglow, Heat, Auralight, Isomair, and Might of the Dragon potions have been proven to be quite effective!
Flames and sources of bright light are very effective in deterring an aggravated Vlyth’s attack!
Their exoskeletons are rather soft, and can be easily penetrated by conventional weapons.
Light coverings are recommended for protections against bites when hunting Vlyth–heavy cloth or mail is sufficient!
Using a source of low light is easiest to locate them at night–due to the reflective “eyes” on their wings!
Are not typically aggressive unless provoked–prefer avoidance over conflict.
Habitat & Diet:Can be found in multiple continents and areas. They dwell near caves and cliffs, where they can hide during the day. Being nocturnal, they emerge at night to roam and feed–and can travel as much as 30 km in one night. They avoid lighted areas and sources of open flame.
Breeding season:  2-3 clutches of eggs per year–clutches can be 50-100 eggs in each clutch. There is no specific time or season for breeding–it is dependant on population stress and food availability.
