1.2.2 Monstrosities: Shadowstalker

Shadowstalker

Monstrum conrepo
Picture
Typical Adult Shadowstalker - Male (Left) Female (Right) 4 ft | 1.2 m at the top of shoulder. Lifespan: 20-25 years.

About:

Not much is known about the life stages of Shadowstalkers–as they seem to be born of darkness and shadow itself, hence their name. They are a large, carnivorous, powerful, cat-like species that have multiple beast and arcane attributes. They vary widely in color, from a lighter grey-brown, to near black–the spots and stripes dotting their pelts is different per individual. Shadowstalkers also display purple-tinged arcane markings on their paws, and around their eyes–with a purple smoke that hovers around the markings. It is unknown whether these markings are from corruption or arcane sources. Due to this, a Shadowstalker not only has physical abilities, but also magical abilities, as is outlined below.
They are found in large packs of 8-20 individuals, always headed by a matriarch–a female of male-like stature and larger size than the rest of the pack. The other pack members are easily identified as male or female based on size and physical attributes–the males are larger, and sport a complete mane about their necks and chests, where females are more lithe with a crest instead of a full mane. Both genders are equally strong and powerful though, with the speed and strength to easily best the bravest of Nordanners. It is recommended to rely on stealth when attempting to retrieve arcane shards in Shadowstalker territory to avoid conflict with a Shadowstalker pack. In some instances, sources of bright light or fire have deterred packs enough to allow for a swift escape.
In addition to their physical prowess, an adult Shadowstalker can summon a purple-hued paralyzing fog to immobilize their prey and enemies. They are also known for mimicking all manner of noises and distress calls of other animals, dragons, and even humans. It has been recorded that some packs also have learned how to mimic a “giggle” or “cackle” that they use to communicate.

Hunting Recommendations:Heat and Moonglow may be useful potions to have on hand!
Isomair, Tempest, Shadowmane, and Might of the Dragon potions have been known to be a useful deterrent when attacked by a pack!
Shadowstalkers are known to be incredibly strong, fast, and stealthy–stealth-based skills are recommended if entering Shadowstalker territory.
If exposed to the paralyzing fog, leave the area immediately before it has a chance to take effect! While not deadly, there is currently no antidote and symptoms must be waited out.
As a general rule for dealing with paralyzing fog–less exposure equals lesser symptoms.
Shadowstalkers are more vulnerable when separated from their pack.
Sources of bright light or fire will deter a Shadowstalker temporarily–but won’t stop them for long!
Habitat & Diet:Shadowstalkers are only found near arcane sources, but have adapted to a variety of climates to be found on any of the continents. They never venture far from their arcane source, and it is believed that the arcane provides the source of their power–though it is also theorized that corruption may also be the cause, as they seem unaffected by sources of corruption. They have been known to raid villages that live near arcane sources.
Breeding season: Unknown.
