1.1.8 Dragons: Wood Dragon

Wood Dragon

Draconis silvis
Picture
Typical Adult Wood Dragon 10-15 ft | 305-457 cm at the top of shoulder. Lifespan: 20-25 years. Rarity: Very Common.

About:

Draconis Silvis, otherwise known as wood dragons, are a docile species in comparison to other dragons. They are often earthy tones with foliage growing from their topline, and are also some of the most talented in the magical arts.  This is due The vast array of arcane-charged gemstones that sprout from their topline. These gemstones be of any type except for diamonds. It takes a lot to provoke wood dragons. They tend to be stealthy and evasive, avoiding conflict. It takes an act of aggression against them, or threatening their offspring to provoke them to attack.
They secrete a wax-like sap that acts as a fertilizer for plant growth in areas they inhabit, making plant larger, more lush, and grow for longer seasons. This also helps in identifying their nesting grounds, as they are abnormally green and lush.  The prior queen  once relocated a handful to Kisarana and Malgosfrom to encourage new growth in the otherwise dead wastelands, but when taken out of their forest homes the dragons become lethargic and unwilling to eat and were soon returned to their homes.

Wood dragons live in communities consisting of family units. Due to this species of dragon breeding every year in the spring, family units can become quite large.  They hatch from mottled brown and white eggs in clutches of one to three in nest disguised amongst the thickest of foliage. When hatched, they have virtually no foliage to cover their wood-like skin and spend the first few weeks hidden in their nest, cared for by their parents until able to blend in to the forest around them. As young adults, antlers and small trees begin to form as an indication of their maturity. The size of these trees and antlers is a good indication to the dragons age.
They will remain with their family units for a period of five years, allowing them to reach full maturity. It is not uncommon for these young adults to venture from their family units to seek out a lifelong mate and start a community of their own. Sometimes they also elect to venture back and forth between their home family units, raising their young amongst two different communities.

Males of the species often have larger antlers, though this is not always true. Otherwise, males and females look exactly alike.

Hunting Recommendations:
  • They are docile and for the most part do not attack humans or horses, preferring to curl up in place and hide amongst heavy foliage.
  • Fieldflower and Heartstone potions may prove useful as a stealth tactic when retrieving gems.
  • When protecting young or provoked, they can use a vast range of  distanced magical attacks, ranging from fire to purple hued energy bursts, telekinesis, and illusions.
  • Protective of nature.
  • As the only gemstone dragons to not routinely shed their gems, they may be protective of their few shed gems, be cautious when gem hunting!
Habitat & Diet:
Forests and woodlands of Aleria, Amadora, and Isles of Invermay. They will often nest in areas of heavy foliage surrounded by trees. They have also been known to create oasis in areas where heavy foliage isn't expected, such as around water sources in desert areas.
Their prey consists of bird eggs, fish from streams, foraged berries, and remains of other animals that have passed, rarely killing for food.
