1.1.8 Dragons: Wood Dragon

Wood Dragon

Draconis silvis
Picture
Typical Adult Wood Dragon 10-15 ft | 305-457 cm at the top of shoulder. Lifespan: 20-25 years.

About:

Draconis Silvis, otherwise known as wood dragons--are a docile species in comparison to other dragons. They are often earthy tones, with foliage growing from their topline, and are also some of the most talented in the magical arts.  This is due to the vast array of charged gemstones that sprout from their topline--which can be nearly any type of gemstone, except for diamonds. They hatch from mottled brown and white eggs in clutches of 1-3, which are typically covered in foliage to disguise them. When hatched, they have virtually no foliage, and will spend the first few weeks hidden in their nest, cared for by their parents until their bright foliage starts to grow in. As they venture out into the world, they remain with their parents until mature at 5 years old--then they venture out to find their own territories. As young adults branches will begin to sprout from their backs. The size of the tree is a good indication to the dragons age.  Due to this species of dragon breeding every year, family units can become quite large.
It takes a lot to provoke wood dragons. They tend to be stealthy and evasive, avoiding conflict. It takes an act of aggression against them, or threatening their offspring to provoke them to attack. Their prey consists of bird eggs, fish from streams, foraged berries, and remains of other animals that have passed, rarely killing for food. Males of the species often have larger antlers, though this is not always true--otherwise, males and females look exactly alike.

Hunting Recommendations:

They are docile and for the most part do not attack at the presence of humans or horses, preferring to curl up in place and hide.
Fieldflower and Heartstone potions may prove useful as a stealth tactic when retrieving gems.
When protecting young or provoked, they can use a vast range of  distanced magical attacks, ranging from fire to purple hued energy bursts, telekinesis, and illusions.
Protective of nature.
As the only gemstone dragons to not routinely shed their gems, they may be protective of their few shed gems, be cautious when gem hunting!
Habitat & Diet:Forests and woodlands of Aleria, Amadora, and Isles of Invermay. They will often nest in clearings, surrounded by trees. The queen considered relocating a handful to Kisarana and Malgosfrom to encourage new growth in the otherwise dead wastelands, but when taken out of their forest homes the dragons become lethargic and are unwilling to eat. The wax-like substance they secrete helps to fertilize the soil and both makes plants more green, larger, and grow for longer seasons--making it highly sought after. This also helps in identifying their nesting grounds, as they are abnormally green and lush.
Breeding Season: Yearly--in the sprintime.
