1.1.6 Dragons: Sea Dragon

Sea Dragon

Draconis kampos
Picture
Typical Adult Sea Dragon 20-30 ft | 6-9 m average in length. Lifespan: 30-40 years. Rarity: Common.

About:

Draconis Kampos, or sea dragons, are another species of Gemstone dragon. They range in colors amongst blue, green, and purple, their fins often a lighter color than their body. The gems these dragons carry are often aquamarine or turquoise, but on rare occasions dragons with other gemstone varieties can be found. Like all gemstone dragons, they shed their gems after breeding.

Unlike most other species of dragon, sea dragons do not hatch from eggs, but are live-birthed in litters no larger than three individuals. Due to this, they don't have a set breeding season, and may have offspring any time year-round.  They will come to the shallows to birth their young in warm water. The mother will stay nearby until the young are strong enough to join their social group in deeper waters. During their first year of life, these dragons resemble smaller adults and are virtually defenseless until they mature at two years old. Adult sea dragons are incredibly fast and agile in the water, and can easily outmaneuver all but the most skilled and crafty horse and rider teams.

Sea dragons live in groups referred to as a battery. Named so because they often attack as a group, and use the razor sharp edges of their fins, physical attacks, and ability to spit boiling hot water jets at their enemies or prey. These battery are often in groups of four to eight, and always possess an alpha. The alpha is easily identified by the larger fins and frills compared to the other adults in the battery. Interestingly, the alphas in a sea dragon battery are either gender, and it does not determine how many individuals are in the battery, as there will be any assortment of male to female ratios. Additionally, Sea Dragon males and females are indistinguishable, except when young are being birthed.

Hunting Recommendations:
  • Oceanpearl is a must!
  • Heat potion is also useful, to avoid the boiling jets this species shoots at prey and attackers alike.
  • Golden wing can be used to fight these dragons near the surface of or in shallow water, if you can coax them out of their caves. They are uncoordinated and slow near the surface or near shorelines, which can be used to your advantage.
  • Underwater cave systems are very complex. Map or mark as you go to prevent getting lost!
  • They possess no magical ability, though the gemstones they carry often do. However, they appear to not be able to harness this power.
Habitat & Diet:
Mostly found surrounding Aleria, Isles of Invermay, and Korandyre. Sea dragons live in vast, twisting mazes of coral and gem-studded underwater caves, only venturing out to hunt. Rarely come to the surface, unless defending territory, or grabbing an easy meal. This species dwells only in saltwater environments, having been pushed out of their old freshwater caves by other species.
They are carnivorous, with prey consisting of any other aquatic species, or whatever may fall into the water. However, they do not eat other dragons.
