1.1.5 Dragons: Cave Dragon

Cave Dragon

Draconis antrum
Picture
Typical Adult Cave Dragon 25-35 ft | 7-10 m at the top of shoulder. Lifespan: 50-70 years.

About:

Draconis Antrum, also known as cave dragons, are a large species that range from dark brown to black in color, and sprout precious magic-filled stones, putting them in the gemstone class of dragon. These gemstones can be any color or mineral composition, and tend to reflect the gems found in the caves of their birth. If encountered while exploring caves, they tend to avoid conflict unless provoked or protecting their young. When provoked these dragons use primarily fire to defend themselves, but may also resort to physical attacks.

Cave dragons are a solitary species, and usually only come together to mate and take care of their eggs in the mid summer. However, there may be multiple adults living in the same cave system.  Their shiny, gem-scaled eggs are laid deep within these caves and underground tunnels and guarded fiercely. It is recommended to stay away cave and tunnel systems in the fall and early winter to avoid encounters. During their first year of life, they are kept under their mother’s watchful eye. But from their second year onward they are left to fend for themselves, reaching full maturity when they are 4 years old. They are a land-dwelling breed, but spend the most of their lives underground, emerging only if they need to move or dig new caves.
Each year, after their breeding season is over, these dragons will shed the gemstones. These dragons take pride in their dens,  and will often clear out older stones to make room for new ones.

Males and females aren't visibly distinguishable. However females of the species tend to be more aggressive, particularly when guarding a nest.

Hunting Recommendations:
  • Heat potion is required to hunt for these kinds of dragons as they will often use fire if provoked.
  • Toxicate, Ram, or Heartstone potions may be useful as secondary potions.
  • Big and slow due to their size, and the confined space they live in. Use this to your advantage!
  • Their skin is armored and protected by gems. But there are soft spots under their jaw, behind the elbow, and in the groin.
  • These dragons often let out an extremely loud warning call, which had been known to stun riders. Hearing protection might prove useful!
Habitat & Diet:
They are found within huge caves and chasms throughout Amadora, The Lost Kingdom, and Kisarana where gemstones are present. Rumor says that if there is an earthquake, that it is merely these fierce beasts warring over territory, as several adults may live within the same cave system and not interact except for these occasions. They rarely leave these vast chasms, and only do so if they are forced out, have outgrown their caves, or have been thrust out by their mothers to fend for themselves.
This dragon’s feeding style is diverse and omnivorous, consisting of whatever happens to be in the area. Whether it be carrion, vegetation, fresh kill, or even other dragons.
