1.1.11 Dragons: Pike Dragon

Pike Dragon

Draconis acanthias
Picture
Typical Adult Pike Dragon 3-9 ft | 1-3 m approximate length. Lifespan: 15-20 years. Rarity: Common.

About:

Pike dragons, sometimes referred to as river dragons, are a species of aquatic dragon that are varying shades of grey, silver, black, and green. They are strong and swift, and possess razor sharp teeth and fins, along with a lure of fools gold attached to a tendinous strand at the end of their whip-like tails. They are the second known species of dragon that live births their young--and these young Pikes will remain with their mother, using her for protection, until they reach roughly 5ft in length. At this point, they leave to find their own territory, where they remain until mature at about 2 years old. Once mature, they will start challenging other Pikes for more territory, or for rights to mate.
Pike dragons are a solitary creature, but still dangerous to deal with as they are very aggressive when their territory is intruded upon--whether it be horses, animals, or other dragons. When provoked, they can launch themselves, sometimes out of the water, at astounding speeds. However, this speed is only good for short bursts, and they quickly tire. They do not possess magic, however they do carry deposits of gold on their head, neck, and in their gills, which routinely sheds once it becomes too heavy, about once a year. The places they inhabit are often glittering with this gold--however, beware of the fools gold lure at the end of their tail! They feast on all manner of fish species, including other Pike dragons, and will occasionally snatch small prey from the banks of their homes. Female Pikes are much larger than their male counterparts, but otherwise there is no difference between the genders.

Hunting Recommendations:

Toxicate is recommended to ward off snapping jaws.
Curiously enough, Moonglow and Auralight confuse these dragons, and they take pause before attacking.
A team is recommended over a single horse and rider due to the challenge these dragons present.
Their fins are able to lie flat, making them harder to spot.
A horse with Oceanpearl is unable to compete with their speed and agility in water, so fighting them on land is best. Distraction and luring them to launch on the shore is the best course of action.
They are slower on land, but their razor sharp fins are a threat--also be aware of their tail, which they can use like a whip!
Habitat & Diet:
Found in freshwater rivers throughout Aleria and tributaries surrounding the Isles of Invermay. Primarily a freshwater fish, but may linger where saltwater and freshwater meet. They avoid particularly deep water, and often stay near the edge where they can lure in prey with their tail. They prefer rocky-bottomed areas, as they blend in better with their surroundings.
Breeding season: Every year during spring
